Upped Like Chumps
A week now without an update. Writing here and there, but obviously not enough. Don’t know exactly what I’ve been busy with, but it certainly feels like it’s hard finding time to get stuff done. Probably spending too much time worrying about it.
GHOSTFACE KILLAH & BADBADNOTGOOD – Sour Soul (Lex): Ghostface continues his collab streak, this time with alt-jazz outfit BadBadNotGood (who got their start with Tyler, the Creator, so at least they’re moving up), though the band doesn’t have the musicianship muscle to match Ghost’s mighty vocals. Regardless, BBNG inject a neo-noirish sound, a change of pace from Ghost’s recent retro-soul addiction and a better sound for the band than their electro-jazz, some of the strongest stuff they’ve done but ultimately too weak, and Ghostface’s tossed-off lyrics make the whole think reek of half-assedness. Also: fuck Danny Brown’s annoying voice. B PLUS (*)
RAE SREMMURD – SremmLife (EarDrummers): Dirty South hip-hop duo Swae Lee and Slim Jimmy, aged 19 and 21, respectively, unleash a barrage of objectification on women with whom I fear they’ve slept plenty of times. Their obsession with video game synths tells you just how much of a fantasy their quest to get their dicks wet really is, and they aspire to be like Donald Trump, if that’s any indication how low they’re aiming. Stupid lyrics with big, beautiful beats. B PLUS (**)
