If Anyone Still Cares About the Santorum Debacle

Renowned idiot Rick Santorum made a comment the other day that the Pope should leave climate change to scientists after Francis pointed out the peril we all face. Bathing in the irony, media outlets went nuts posting pieces about how Pope Francis actually has a degree in chemistry, and it’s just so gosh darn hilarious because irony.

This is a wasted opportunity. Beyond the fact that having a BS in chemistry doesn’t make you a climate expert, no one bothered calling Santorum on his shit. He himself doesn’t leave climate change to scientists, so where does he get off telling the Pope to? When Fox News pundit Chris Wallace told Santorum that the Pope would say he’s trying to save the environment, Santorum responded that “There are far more pressing problems confronting the earth than climate change.” I’m pretty sure climate scientists would disagree, Rick, so you should just leave it to them.

I know there’s no point in asking, but when will Republicans finally concede, as they have with every other position they’ve held when it becomes too unpopular? Unlike gay marriage and marijuana legalization, climate change is not something where we can kick up our feet and wait for the tide of popular opinion to roll over them. It took far too long for gays to have the legal right to get married, but failing to deal with it wouldn’t have put the world in mortal danger, and the continued denial of climate change nears us closer to the cliff’s edge every day.
